Climate Change And Our Polarizing World

As the realities of climate change are upon us, how do we build connections with each other and not more walls? How do we recognize there is no “them”, that on this tiny blue ball, there is only “us” here?

Planet Earth is a tiny living blue ball hanging in the middle of nowhere. Humanity is an even tinier (but powerful) living organism on the Earth.

Climate change becomes more and more real. Ocean and wind currents are shifting, poles are melting, “extreme weather” brings drought, flooding, hurricanes, species extinction, affecting and impacting the earth and each of us in our everyday life. The Earth, of course, is experiencing trauma. Is it any wonder humanity is also in trauma, in ways we do not understand?

One possible human reaction is to become more and more protective, leading to building emotional, psychological and physical walls. Populism and fascism are rising around the world. Another possible reaction would be to reach across the divisions we humans create in the natural world, and recognize that on this tiny blue ball, hanging in the middle of nowhere, there is no “them”…there is only “us” here.

We are asking: What stops us from taking real, collective action on climate change? What do we need to embrace the fact that Climate Change is here and to respond?

We are inviting you to join this powerful process of Power Play, led by David Diamond. Theatre artists / activists are gathering in Thessaloniki, Greece, to create short plays that ask how blockages are manifesting in our lives and getting in the way of us taking collective responsibility and action, in response to Climate Change. In Forum Theatre, we will collectively try to find human solutions to help us identify and move through the blockages. We are inviting you and your stories/ experiences to join us and create theatre together with us.

The Power Play process will last for 6 days: 19-23 September + 3 October (8 hours each day) and it will be led by the renowned theatre director David Diamond.

David has adapted Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed into what he now calls “Theatre for Living” approaching the work from a systems perspective: www.theatreforliving.com.

The Power Play will be created by people from diverse backgrounds and walks of life from around the world. It will be performed as interactive, Forum Theatre and it will contribute to create the international conference Play, Perform, Learn, Grow (PPLG): Bridging Communities, Practices and the World, Thessaloniki, Greece, 4-6 October 2019.

There is a limited number for maximum 15 participants.

Participation in PPLG is an integral part of the process, and a requisite to participate in the Power Play process. We will provide an international stage with more than 250 people from 30 countries that will come together to build new communities.
